Open Source Computer Weekend-Workshops in the “Toni-Molkerei”
Saturday, 12th November 2005, 2 pm Place: revamp-it, Toni-Molkerei
Revamping instead of destroying computers: Linux-network with recycled computers
1) Presentation and Testing of LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project)
10 persons are working at the same time with newest software on old computers (Pentium 1 or even 486), so-called clients, which are connected to a powerful fast server:
Office works as word-processing and spread-sheet analysis, etc. (OpenOffice),
Surfing on the Internet (Firefox), chatting (Xchat), etc., etc...
Sharing printers, scanner, ...
LTSP is based on LINUX as Open Source operating system: there is open access to the source code for all who are interested. Everyone may take part in the ongoing development of LTSP.
2) All participants are welcome to join in depending on their capabilities:
Installation and testing of a LTSP-network (server and client)
Demonstration how to integrate or replace a new client, if a client breaks down
Simulation of a power outage (as it's possible in Africa or anywhere else)
3) We present a LTSP-project for an employment in Africa:
A friend from Africa talks about the current stage of the project:
How can Swiss people participate in this project?
Energy Supply: Presentation of a computer working with 12 V.
Co-operations, financing possibilities
Which further steps are necessary?
4) Clustering:
Future of the LTSP: all computers of a LTSP network sharing RAM and the capacities of their processors; if one PC has too much to do, it passes over work to other computers.
5) Discussion on other possible employments and sharing of experiences
